Assignment 5 - Climate Change (Final)

The design technique I applied for this assignment is Gestalt's principles of perception. The contrast between before and after deforestation. The left half of the tree with leaves on its branches on a light blue background is the state before deforestation while the right half of the tree with no leaf on its branches on a subtle red background is the state after deforestation has taken place. The transition from a healthy tree to a dead tree.

Assignment 4 - Color Coalition (Final)

Color exploration:

For this assignment 4, I want to create the awareness of the uses of ezlink card on the public transports to the young target audiences. I decide on a local theme because most of the times I travel to and back from school via bus and mrt. The actual postcard is the cut out shape of Singapore map. The blue background is unwanted areas but it can be used both ways to cut out the Singapore shape or leave it as it is.

Assignment 3 - U C What I C (Final)

The shots are taken with Sony DSC-H1 5.1 megapixel digital camera. The numberings on the bottom right corner of each photo indicates the hierarchical orders of the photo sequence. The photo sequence is fairly straightforward. Can U C What I C?

Assignment 2 - Less Is More (Final)

This is the abstraction process for my assignment 2. For this version, I still stick to the two celebrities I used before in the old version of my assignment 2. First, I traced out the details of the faces of both celebrities. Then I start reducing the minor details while maintaining the distinct features of their faces. I chose the second last frame of reduction process as my final prototype.

The design technique I used for this assignment 2 is the Gestalt's principles of perception. The contrast look of both characters. Martial arts movie stars from the East and the West fighting each other. I chose red color for the foreground silhouettes as red color shows the intensity of the combat.

Final Project

For the final project, we are tasked to work in groups of 3-5 members to create an e-book on food theme. There are 2 options to choose: either children storybook e-book or comic e-book. For our group, we chose to create a children storybook e-book. My group members are Andrea Loh, Shireen and Keng Kok. Although the final project is a very heavy workload, our group managed to pull off. It was an enjoyable teamwork, we learnt alot from one another not just about nm2208 but other stuff too. You may view the e-book from the url link below.

Personal Work

These are some drawings I did a few years ago. Most of the times when I am very bored, then I reference some of the comics or photos and sketch the images.

Assignment 1 - Me, Myself and I (Final)

The initial design of the mecha was to make it look like a mix of dragon and mecha. As Bruce Lee's name has a "dragon" chinese character. Thus, I thought of coloring the armor of the mecha with the color of the scales of standard chinese dragon. During the critique session, the class suggested using either the space or battleground as background. I chose the space as the background because of its dark color that will bring out the metallic looks on the mecha.

Adobe Workshop - Photoshop for beginners, Intermediate I & II, Advance

This is what I learnt from the Adobe Workshop Photoshop for beginners: using pen tool to trace out the shape of an object for this case is an apple and applying gradient to the object.

These are the stuff taught during the intermediate photoshop workshop

This is advance photoshop workshop taught how to create a water color effect on the person by blending different layers.

Adobe Workshop - Illustrator for beginners, Intermediate I & II, Advance

The most frequently used tool in Illustrator is the pen tool which I used very often too for most of my NM2208 assignments

For the intermediate workshop, we were taught how to customise the brush tool.

Assignment 5 - Climate Change

The critiques I received from the tutorial group:
  • the cause of climate change is not shown on the infographic
  • there are no measurement units to show the data of the graph
  • the name of the organisation is not necessary to be included on the infographic
Suggestions for improvements:
  • use the food to represent the line of the graph
  • do a bar chart with the cause of climate from the bottom to the top of the chart with the effects of the climate change
  • shows how climate affect crop as a result affecting food prices
  • design the infographic like a stock report base on weather color

Assignment 4 - Color Coalition

Final Prototype of the postcard:

Back of the postcard:

The critiques I received from the tutorial group:
  • too spread out, no interaction between the objects
  • ezlink card seems like floating in the background by itself
Suggestions for improvements:

  • overlap creates some interaction
  • make the transports pop up from the background
  • show a person's hand holding a map and holding a bus on the map
  • use the SMRT route map as a board game platform

Class Exercise E

For this week class exercise, we were tasked to pick two words from the list and use basic elements to create two talking forms. The word I chose was "joy" while my groupmate chose "chaos". I used lines to form fireworks, the number of lines I used was even number because even numbers come in pair which are happy numbers. The colors I used for the lines were yellow and orange because both yellow and orange are colors associated with joy. I used a black background to bring out the fireworks look and using common sense; fireworks are usually launched during the night when the sky is dark. I added a few yellow dots in the background to enhance the overall look.

"JOY"

My groupmate for this exercise chose the word “Chaos” and his description is below:
I depict it by using earthquake and/or wall creaks and cracks as the basic design. The overall image shows ‘chaos-ness’ as the lines goes hay-wire. At the same time, the cracks were also random in terms of size and direction which ties in with the word, chaos.

"CHAOS"

Assignment 3 - U C What I C

U C What I C

The critiques I received for this assignment:
  • the concept of a female transform into a male is very hard to accept
  • too many concepts within 9 photos is not advisable
  • the rushing shots: staircase and corridor, are too static
Suggestions for improvements:
  • maybe have a frame display the female took some kind of pills that caused the female-to-male transformation
  • maybe manipulate or blur the rushing shots to create the rushing effects

Class Exercise D

For this week class exercise, we were tasked to take a few camera shots of a subject within or area just outside of the lecture theatre. I chose a can drink as my subject. For any human being, there is a head and body, whereas a can itself is just a cylinder. Hence, the types of shots I could take for a can is less compared to taking a human as the subject.

Long shot of the can

Full shot of the can

Low angle shot of the can

High angle shot of the can

Since this week Monday is Valentine's Day, I took a few shots of a bouquet of roses. I realised the types of shots for objects are ambiguous depend on how you define it.
Full shot of the bouquet

Medium shot of the bouquet

Close up shot of the bouquet

The first photo gives a close-up-eye level view of the object and gives a sense of ‘close-ness’ towards the object. More importantly, due to its eye level, it gives a feel of neutral and view of high details.

The second photograph is a close-bottom-up view of the same object. This gives a sense of ‘superiority’ to the object —> like being worshipped.

The third photograph shows the object from a long distance high angle view. This creates a feel directly opposite to that in photograph 2, a sense of lost and vulnerability.

The last photograph shows a general view of the object from a longer distance than that of photograph 3. This gives an overall neutral view of the environment the object resides in.
